Born in forbidding, polluted Norilsk, Siberia's northernmost city, Bartenev studied theater direction during the Soviet era. After the collapse of the USSR, he says, "There was this immense window over Russia, open to every opportunity, every possibility. It was crazy. One could do anything. It was a huge promise. I did so many performances, did so many crazy things."
