Tales of the Drug Lord's Son
Killing the Justice Minister
In 1984 Colombia's Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara, shown here on vacation with his two sons, was one of the few crusaders against the country's $5 billiona-year cocaine industry. In April 1984, on the streets of Bogotá, two young hit men, apparently on orders from Escobar, rode a red Yamaha motorcycle up alongside Lara's white Mercedes and pumped seven bullets into him. One of Lara's sons, also named Rodrigo, was just 8 at the time but helped bodyguards bring his bullet-riddled father to the hospital. The killing helped turn popular sentiment in Colombia against the drug lord.
