A doctor recruited by Jordanian intelligence, al-Balawi blew himself up in an attack that killed seven CIA agents and his Jordanian handler, Sharif Ali bin Zeid, a first cousin of King Abdullah II. He lured the operatives to a meeting at an American forward operating base in Afghanistan after claiming that he had valuable intelligence that could point to the location of Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's deputy. It appears that al-Balawi misled agents and tested the tradecraft of three intelligence apparatuses
