The U.K. Heroin Underground

In 2007, alarmed by the rise of heroin use in the United Kingdom, photographer Andy Moxon began to follow the members of a drug-using community in a small city in southern England. For two years, he documented the addicts he encountered in a half-mile radius of the city. Many of the users gathered in the single-room government flat belonging to an older heroin user named Charlie, because it was a safe place to buy and consume heroin and crack. J, posing above with a spoonful of heroin, was 18 and a relatively new user at the time this photo was taken. Charlie's flat would fall under police surveillance, and Charlie was subsequently evicted.
