As a person with high-functioning autism, Grandin is intimately familiar with the sensation of being overwhelmed by sights and sounds. When she was young, she related her feelings to the behavior she observed in cattle on the ranch where she was living. The insight has led her to create designs for sweeping, curved corrals, intended to reduce the stress experienced by animals behind led to slaughter.
