Inside the Mine with Edison Peña
Edison Peña / Adam Patterson / Panos
Accommodations
Peña took this photo of the area where he slept. The camera was provided by photographer Adam Patterson, who was part of a team on the surface making a documentary about the miners. Patterson, along with his colleagues and Peña's girlfriend Alvarez, conspired to smuggle the small digital camera to Peña by wrapping it in socks and packing it in a paloma. Peña was initially skeptical of the idea but eventually took to documenting the miners' living conditions.
