Fortunate Few
After crossing the Rapidan River into Virginia, the soldiers of Company 1 of the 547th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment were immediately caught up in the Battle of the Wilderness. The company numbered 86 men when the campaign began. When this photograph was taken several weeks later, these nine men were the only survivors.
