Astronaut Dale Gardner used the manned maneuvering unit (MMU)—essentially a jet pack strapped to his back—to fly from Discovery and snare the Westar 6 satellite, in this November, 1984 mission. Westar 6 was one of two spent communications satellites Discovery brought home on that flight.
