Diana's hands-on style of parenting became evident almost immediately. She refused to leave nine-month old William in London while she and Charles made an official visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1983. As William and his younger brother Prince Harry grew older, Diana did her best to make them worldly, but also compassionate. The boys later accompanied her to homeless shelters, orphanages and hospitals around the world.
