(COLUMBIA, S.C.) — The chairwoman of the South Carolina Democratic Party — who also is a party superdelegate — is backing Barack Obama.

Carol Fowler says in a news release put out by Obama's campaign that the Illinois senator has proven his ability to win in conservative states such as South Carolina and he's brought new voters to the polls.

State Democratic Party executive director Joe Werner confirmed the endorsement. Fowler was not immediately available for comment.

Fowler's husband also is a superdelegate. Don Fowler has endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Two other South Carolina superdelegates are split, with Waring Howe supporting Obama and Marva Smalls pulling for Clinton.

Four other superdelegates have not said whom they will support.
