An ultra-Orthodox Jewish man swings a chicken over his head as he performs a Kaparot ceremony at an outdoor market in Jerusalem's Mea Sharim neighborhood. The ritual, in which it is believed that one transfers one's sins from the past year into a chicken, is performed before the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year.
