A resident of Tai Hang village on Hong Kong island maneuvers a staff of joss sticks at a 'Fire Dragon' festival in this once small Hakka village to celebrate its salvation from a legendary gigantic snake. The festival, which coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival here is held from a legend that in 1880 Hong Kong was lashed by a storm after which a giant snake appeared and then the plague. A Buddha then told the villagers a fire dragon would rid them of their bad luck and the performance has been held ever since. (Sunday, September 30, 2001) | |
