Fifty-five-year-old Nafasgul practices walking on her prosthetic leg at the International Committee for the Red Cross Ortho Center in Kabul. Nafasgul lost her leg when she stepped on a mine three years ago and now has to rely on an artificial prosthetic leg to walk. Afghanistan is the most heavily mined country in the world, and last year there were 1,003 casualties of which 571 were children. The ICRC claims this year the number of people stepping on mines is 10 to 12 per day. (Monday, December 10, 2001)
