The baby's unexpected birth a month ago puts the herd at nine, now the second largest captive herd in California after the San Diego Zoo. The giraffe enclosure is too small to house the growing herd, so the zoo has launched a contest giving naming rights for the baby to the person who ponies up the most money to build a new giraffe shelter. (Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002)
