U.S. sculptor John House stands next to a cast of what will be the largest bronze in the world, a three-story statue that represents conquistador Don Juan Onate at House's studio outside Mexico City. The nearly $3 million bronze artwork was commissioned by the city of El Paso, Texas. Onate, the first successful colonizer of the American southwest in the late 16th century, became infamous for cutting off the feet of 24 Acoma Indians. Several Indian rights' groups have voiced their opposition to the statue. (Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002) | |
