What do you make of the Bush National Guard controversy?
President Bush has seen his Vietnam-era military record resurrected as an issue for the 2004 campaign. With his Democratic opponent most likely to be John Kerry, a decorated Navy veteran who served on small boats in the Mekong River, questions have been raised about whether Bush showed up for duty with the Air National Guard in Texas and Alabama, particularly while he was in Alabama working on a Senate campaign. The White House released documents it said back up Bush's service record, but many Democrats were unsatisfied, and the issue persists in the national media. What do you think? Are questions about Bush's service justified, or is this unfair to the President?

It is relevant for a president willing to send troops to die for a cause (and not WMDs), it is our right to know his complete military experience.

Why does it matter? He has served for more than three years and proven himself to be more than up to the job. If the media weren't so starved to make a scandal out of everything, it would already have gone away!

Gutter politics as usual from the Democrats. I have a friend who served with President Bush in the National Guard and we are all outraged at this continuing smear campaign. We are all blessed to have a brave and courageous President to lead us in the war on terror. Don't ever forget 9/11.

I know media bashing seems old, but they keep giving us reasons to bash them. It doesn't seem fair that Bill Clinton spent his time in England avoiding the draft during the Vietnam War and made a visit to Moscow in the midst of the Cold War. When those facts were brought forth by Republicans, it was described as "dirty politics." George W. Bush allegedly missed a couple of weekends of National Guard service and he is being pounded for it.

This is a waste of time. Besides, if only war heroes should be elected, President Clinton should have lost both of his elections. I am more interested in what Kerry is going to do more than what Bush is doing to protect the U.S. Right now he is not impressing me. Let's see what scandals begin to dog Kerry. No one this smug has clean skirts.

As an honored Vietnam veteran, I am only concerned with Senator John Kerry's behavior after his return from his Vietnam tour of duty. His anti-war stance did not do one thing to help any of us who were serving in Vietnam or those of us that had orders to go to Vietnam. He behaved as a disingenuous politician, just like he does today!

Now that the Democrats have a viable candidate with a decorated military career, all of a sudden this becomes an issue? What will we have to talk about when either party has a viable woman candidate who has no military service record? Submit to press scrutiny a video from her experiences in the delivery room giving birth?

[It is the] same as going to Yale and Harvard. Opportunities are available to the wealthy and connected that are not available to most others. The Bush administration is doing its best to obfuscate the issue. I fear that they may well be successful.

I do not like George W. Bush, but I can understand his efforts to avoid the draft. I think most Americans would try and use connections to avoid going into a war that led to so many deaths. My problem with Bush is that he is trying to portray himself as if he is General Patton in the war on terrorism. Furthermore I am outraged at how the White House treated a Vietnam triple amputee (Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia) during the mid-term elections when they know that Bush avoided the draft.

I believe what the President said. Move on to more important issues regarding governing the country.

The proof is in his 201 record (official personnel file), not in what has been presented so far. A 201 file contains everything that a military service member has done. Also, President Bush's father was/is well-connected and he used the "good old boy" network to get his son his "honorable" discharge. Remember, when President Bush was younger, he was a bit of a screw-up and had a problem with drink.

Don't get me wrong, I hate George W. Bush as much as the next guy, but this hardly seems worth a controversy.

After listening to 8 years of Republicans' snide accusations against Clinton, it's about time the finger of blame was pointed at one who skated through media "scrutiny" during the 2000 "election." Fair is fair...just not to Republican hypocrites.
