The Lufthansa Ladies

t is not true, as has been widely reported, that IBM has an elevator in its exhibition booth at CeBIT. They have two. "I've been in the trade show business for 18 years," says one awe-struck exhibitor from Florida. "Can you imagine installing an elevator for a show that runs one week!"

Well, to paraphrase Ronald Reagan, if you've seen one elevator, you've seen them all. The real jaw-dropper of this space is the stainless steel and wood suspension bridge that swoops high overhead, arching from one side of the huge IBM space to another and connecting overhead conversation pods.

But my favorite touch is what one IBM executive describes as "our wonderful Lufthansa Ladies." Here and there as you move through the crowded IBM maze of Thinkpads playing DVD movies, big servers and the snazzy-looking Network Vehicle (the van with the Web browser in the dash), you will encounter very nice ladies serving coffee and juice from what look very much like airline carts. In fact, they are.
