Actually, mechanical docs will probably be in your house - from toilets that diagnose samples every time you tinkle to toothbrushes that check for gum disease and nag you to floss. While current trends suggest that the most dramatic changes in medical care will spring from "smart" technology - ever-tinier instruments, sophisticated computer modeling - the artificial intelligence programs required to turn R2D2 into an untiring resident are still a long way off.
