How Will the Universe End? (With a Bang or a Whimper?)

First, be gladdened by the news that the universe will last a lot longer than humans will, so we'll be spared the grim experience of sitting around and taking bets on whether we'll be sucked into a black hole. Then be confused, because though scientists are willing to venture a few guesses as to how it will all end, they remain largely undecided. Overall, we'd like to keep it that way.
