Amy Winehouse performs on the Pyramid Stage on the first day ot the Glastonbury Festival Somerset, England.
A huge crowd shows for the young London singer, whose soul-filled R&B vocals tell more tales than a 23-year-old should know. Although she's in the presence of fans, the problem for Winehouse is transporting her late-night, smoky-club vocals to a muddy West Country farm for a crowd wearing Mackintoshes. Her stage is stylishly draped and the backing band is slick in Blues Brother suits, but Winehouse struggles to impose her lounge-glamour. The weather doesn't help, of course. It is ridiculously changeable: waterproofs are hauled on and off sometimes twice during one song. Winehouse finds her feet and the crowd sways to "Back to Black," the title track from her latest U.K. No. 1 album, and the global hit "Rehab" has the crowd joining in. But the biggest cheer of the day was reserved for one particularly dramatic break in the clouds. If the singer found that distracting, she couldn't have been too happy when a large portion of the crowd turned around to watch a hang-glider drifting over the campsite.
