Often strong, and always sensible, but didn't seem to connect with the audience and lost the ongoing "who can be less like a Senator" contest to Joe Biden. Boldly tried to claim audience member Marian Wright Edelman, the prominent children's rights advocate and longtime friend of Hillary Clinton, as an ally of his own. Still he showed some welcome energy, recognizing the need to step up his game and break through. Maybe next time he actually will.
