Back in the Ring
American Gladiators the early-'90s TV show that pitted amateur athletes against professional "gladiators" in events like Powerball, the Maze and Joust is returning to prime time. NBC will update the show this fall with 21st century twists, including an Olympic-size stadium and special effects. "The time has come for it to return," says Craig Plestis, head of reality programming for NBC. The network hopes Gladiators, which recently regained some following when ESPN Classic started airing old episodes, will have a new generation of fans. "There's nothing like it on TV at all," Plestis says.
