The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter is back with Matchbox Twenty and set to tour with the band in January.

After going solo for a few years, is it good to be back with Matchbox Twenty?
We've always been friends, and we were friends while I was doing my solo thing, so it never really felt like we were apart as people. But it's nice to play together again.

Which do you prefer — making solo albums or albums with the band?
I thought when I first made a solo record that I liked making them better, but it was because my experience had only been in a band. Coming back to the band, I really started to appreciate the collaborative process. I'm hoping that I'll be able to make the switch doing solo records and records with the band constantly.

Do you remember the first time you heard one of your songs on the radio?
It was during a locals' hour. When you're a big local band on the radio, you feel so famous, but when you start to do really well, you have more perspective. You don't feel famous anymore. You feel lucky to be there.

Where do you keep your Grammys?
They're in my studio's lounge area with all my other plaques. I didn't want to keep them in my house, where it would be like, Hey, look at all my platinum records.
