"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina."'

Tancredo, explaining to a group of Iowans how he would deter Islamic fundamentalists from attacking the U.S. The campaign has since stood by his statement, even though a spokesman for the U.S. State Department called Tancredo's comments "outrageous and reprehensible."
