TIME.com's First Annual Blog Index
From millions of blogs about nothing, we've selected the 25 best about somethingfrom politics and global affairs to shopping and sports. And, yes, we've got a few about nothing, too Tom McNichol
Metafilter
The venerable okay, crusty community blog has been around since 1999, an eon in webtime. But it's still one of the best "you never know what you'll read today" destinations around. While the typical blog is written by one person wearing sweatpants reclaimed from the hamper, Metafilter lets any user regardless of what they're wearing contribute links and brief commentary highlighting interesting stuff he or she finds on the web. The result is a jarring mix of web highs and lows, a digital repository of cultural artifacts with the control set to "random." On any given day, you can find sharp political commentary, underground art, you've-got-to-see-this YouTube links, unlikely blogs , historical controversies revisited, oddball collections, and the occasional not suitable for work erotic lithograph. An "Ask Metafilter" forum lets members pose questions to the entire community; the Big Questions have ranged from "What is the best way to tell someone that you don't love them?" to "Of all the recipes that call for eggs, which are improved the most by using very fresh ones?" In both cases, you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs.
