The Design 100
Great design is no longer reserved solely for museum-worthy products, as multitasking designers turn their attention to everything from books to artisanal food, and from lighting to transportation
DB Salt
The latest obsession of chef David Burke is pink Himalayan rock salt. He uses it as a seasoning, but he has also repurposed it as a building material. "Architecturally, it's gorgeous," says Burke, who constructed a hostess stand out of it at his restaurant in the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas. Home cooks who aren't up for a kitchen renovation can order the salt by the pound ($18) and grate it over a piece of fish. davidburke.com Kate Novack
