Argentine Roberto Di Vicenzo thought he was heading to a playoff with Bob Goalby, but he failed to read the fine print. Playing partner Tommy Aaron had accidentally given him a four instead of a three on the 71st hole, and Di Vicenzo signed the incorrect scorecard. Under golf's picky rules, Di Vicenzo officially lost by one stroke. "Twenty-five million people saw Roberto birdie the 17th hole," said pro Jimmy Demaret. "I think it would hold up in court." DiVicenzo followed up with this famous lament: "What a stupid I am."
