As King Gyanendra prepares to depart from the Nepalese royal palace, TIME takes a look at how other former and wannabe Monarchs have weathered the loss of their crowns
Pahlavi, the eldest son of the last Iranian shah, was driven from his homeland at age 17 on the eve of the 1979 Iranian revolution. Landing at America's shores, he was educated at the University of Southern California. An outspoken critic of Tehran's strict Islamic regime, Pahlavi lives in the U.S. and frequently delivers speeches extolling the potential virtues of a secular, democratic Iran.
