Top U.S. Open Meltdowns
A look back through the years at the best golfing goof-ups
Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson waits on the 18th green during the final round of the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
He stood at the 18th tee box with a one-shot lead. Despite hitting only two fairways all day, Mickelson pulled out his driver and proceeded to whack his shot off of a hospitality tent. Mickelson then tried to miraculously cut the ball around a set of trees to the green, but his shot rocketed off a tree and journeyed back near his feet. He finished with a double bogey and lost the Open by a stroke, leaving the raucous, pro-Mickelson New York crowd in stunned silence. "I just can't believe that I did that," he said afterwards. "I am such an idiot."
