The cricketers from Down Under won an unprecedented third straight World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka in the final by 53 runs. It was a bizarre finish to a strange tournament. In the final, the light was so poor that the Sri Lankans appeared to concede defeat before playing out the match out in near darkness. The early stages of the Cup were marred by the suspected murder of Pakistan's coach, Bob Woolmer, just hours after Ireland ousted his team. A recent coroner's inquest failed to determine what killed Woolmer.
