"The other day, the oil companies reported the highest profits in the history of the world. I want to take those profits and I want to put them into a strategic energy fund."
Hillary Clinton, at the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting
Clinton's supporters suggested this was an innocent slip of the tongue and that the Senator didn't mean to suggest the federal government should be expropriating legally earned corporate profits. Her critics called the comment communist in nature. The Clinton campaign later clarified her statement, saying she supports using fees and discontinued tax breaks to create the federal fund.
