Mar. 23: Tensions reach a boiling point in the Persian Gulf as Iranian forces seize 15 British naval personnel in the Shatt al-Arab waterway that separates Iran from Iraq. Tehran claims the Britons were arrested in Iranian waters, but Britain disputes the claim. Thirteen days later, Iran frees the sailors and marines, following negotiations with the British government.
