Michael DeBakey, 1908-2008
Adrian Kantrowitz, 1918-2008
l. to r.: Polaris; L. Vad Technology Inc. / APTheir trade was in matters of the heart. Kantrowitz performed the first U.S. heart transplant; DeBakey, the first coronary bypass. Kantrowitz created a device to help keep a heart pumping outside the hospital; DeBakey devised the procedure to repair torn aortas. Their combined work led to the invention of virtually entire medical fields, and the knowledge that some broken hearts can be mended.
