He took the podium in spring 2006 as the third of George W. Bush's press secretaries, and he faced a hostile crowd. But his unabashed defense of the Administration was tempered by his respectful, helpful attitude toward reporters on the beat, and when he didn't have an answer, he said the rarest, most disarmingly honest words in Washington: "I don't know."
