Callie Shell / Aurora for TIME
Barack Obama's historic march to the White House dominated headlines in 2008 and provided many of year's most memorable photos. TIME photographer Callie Shell was given behind-the-scenes access to the Obama team as it moved from victory in Iowa to triumph in November. In this photo, taken moments before Obama delivered a victory speech St. Paul, Minnesota after clinching the nomination in June, the future president is joined by his wife and aides, including Valerie Jarrett (in purple) who would later be named as a Senior Adviser to the President-elect.
