Best and Worst Sports Executives 2008
There is a whole other game that goes on behind the scenes in any sport. TIME has chosen some of the notable and not so notable sports executives and asks you to vote on who plays the game best
By Sean Gregory, Josh Tyrangiel, Adam Smith, Hannah Beech, Kristina Dell, Andrew Downie, Uki Goni, Jeff Israely, Tony Karon, Glen Levy, Catherine Mayer, Simon Robinson, Bill Saporito, and Yuri Zarakhovich
Age: 56
Title: Commissioner of the National Hockey League
PRO: After some rocky years of labor strife and declining ratings, Bettman has settled the league into a comfortable run of modest prosperity. The annual outdoor game is a brilliant piece of marketing, and his weekly radio show gives fans a chance to hit him directly with concerns.
CON: No matter what Bettman's tried in his 15 years at the helm, the NHL remains a fourth-place league well behind the NFL, MLB and NBA. The Versus deal (quick: what channel is Versus on your cable system?) is still a major impediment to new audiences.
