A Brief History of Microphone Gaffes
The Reverend Jesse Jackson might be the latest public figure to forget about his mic, but he's certainly not the first. Here, TIME presents the top 10 most memorable microphone gaffes.

Kathleen Gingrich, mother of Republican politician Newt Gingrich, initially refused to tell CBS' Connie Chung what her son thought about First Lady Hillary Clinton during a 1995 interview. Chung pressed her for details, saying, "Just whisper it to me, just between you and me." Microphone clipped in place, Gingrich leaned in and confided, "He thinks she's a bitch." Though critics blasted Chung for airing the "private" comment, Clinton tried to make amends by inviting both Gingriches on a personal tour of the White House. They accepted.
