Using nutritional guidelines by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, TIME.com put popular kid-friendly food products to the test. Here's a sample of packaged foods that parents may be better off avoiding, plus our suggestions for what to buy instead

They have 12 g of whole grains per serving and they're an excellent source of iron, zinc and six B vitamins, according to the box. What's not so mini about these mini waffles is the percentage of calories from fat — more than 37% per four-waffle serving.

Better choice: Quaker Oats. Swap the waffles for some good old-fashioned oatmeal. It's low in fat (less than 17% of total calories per serving), and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. To sweeten it, add fruit — or sprinkle on a little cinnamon, which may also help to lower cholesterol and blood sugar.
