Evidently, parts of the Wild West are still pretty wild. In southwest Wyoming, thousands of horses still run free across the fenceless plains. The equine herds are descendants of the original animals that were brought over by the Spanish or horses that escaped from local ranches. Along the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop a rough, 50-mile stretch of road that runs between Rock Springs and Green River you'll have a chance to see the herds reasonably up close. Depending on the time of year, you may also spot elk, antelope and coyotes. One of the better times to make the drive is in late May or early June when the studs are fighting for dominance. Makes the human dating scene look positively civilized.
