From attack ads to feel-good jingles, TIME takes a look at the best campaign commercials
When South Dakota Senator George McGovern won the 1972 Democratic nomination on an antiwar platform, Richard Nixon used his calls for troop withdrawal and a reduction in defense spending against him. Attack ads are rarely lighthearted, but this one went with bark instead of bite. Don't vote for McGovern, it warned, or he'll steal your toys and cut your military in half.
