From gaffes to one-line zingers, TIME presents history's best-remembered quotes from the vice-presidential debates

After George Bush offered to help Geraldine Ferraro understand the nuances of international diplomacy during the 1984 debates, the first-ever female vice-presidential candidate fired back: "I almost resent, Vice President Bush, your patronizing attitude that you have to teach me about foreign policy." Twelve years later, the Queens native would recall it as a spontaneous response, saying, "He kept talking down to me." (That Bush continually referred to her as "Mrs. Ferraro" instead of "Congresswoman Ferraro" didn't help the situation).
