Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

Tom Hanks plays Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson who, as the gussied-up Julia Roberts puts it, sat at the "intersection of the State Department, the Pentagon, and the CIA — the three agencies you would need to conduct a covert war." And so he does.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman's a treat here as the dissolute, grimy, hotheaded CIA officer who provides some of the film's most lively moments. Sometimes it seems like he's in a different movie altogether.
