This year, about 182,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That means that an American woman's chance of developing the disease during her lifetime is about 1 in 8. But there is good news: the number of women receiving mammograms and doing self-exams is increasing, raising the odds of early detection, while new research and treatments continue to lower the death rate from breast cancer each year.
