Saturday Night Live alum Al Franken is fighting to become Minnesota's next Senator, but he's far from the first person to turn celebrity into a run for office. A look at a few of his predecessors and their entertainment careers before (and in some cases, after) they became public servants
If Democrats have their way, Stewart Smalley may be voting alongside Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton. Franken, a former Saturday Night Live star and best-selling comic author, is locked in a tight U.S. Senate race against incumbent Norm Coleman of Minnesota. Franken has tried hard to define himself as a serious politician, but he comes from a long line of actors with zero political experience who have cashed in on their name recognition and likeability to enter politics.
