California may be a blue state, but the success of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team has Democratic presidential hopefuls seeing red.

Without fail, every time the LA Lakers have played in an NBA championship during an election year — win or lose — the Republican presidential candidate has gone on to the Oval Office. This has happened eight times: in 1952, 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000 and 2004.
