He comforted families and choked up on national television, belying the reputation of Chinese leaders as stodgy bureaucrats cooped up in Beijing.

Con: Yes, he's the man who apologizes for shoddy school infrastructure that kills children during an earthquake, the poisoned milk scandal that killed four babies and sickened hundreds, coal-mining accidents, and other serious slip-ups. But stronger oversight from Wen and China's central government might have tempered these disasters.
