Sarah Palin

Brooks Kraft / Corbis for TIME

Pro: Her rise from Alaska Governor to national symbol of homespun populism took place literally overnight, as did her ability to catapult John McCain to a brief lead in the polls.

Con: Didn't excel at sit down interviews and had a tendency to go 'rogue.' Shopping spree didn't quite jibe with her image, either.
