As Britney Spears prepares to release her latest attempt to recapture America's love, Circus, TIME looks back at the most notable comeback albums of recent decades.
Yes, Graceland has the infectious single "You Can Call Me Al." But the album was more than just a vehicle for a music video starring Chevy Chase. A joyous mashing of styles (South African mbaqanga, zydeco, etc.) and a tonic after the failed attempt to record a Simon and Garfunkel reunion album, Graceland had a little bit for you and a little for him. Everyone liked it. Except the United Nations, that is. Released in 1986, the album courted controversy when the world body blacklisted Simon for violating the cultural boycott of then apartheid-era South Africa, where he and many local musicians recorded most of the songs.
