7. Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens, New Bern, N.C.

Tryon Palace, the 18th-century building that once served as the capitol of colonial North Carolina and has received George Washington as a guest gets all dressed up for the holidays. From Dec. 1 through the first week in January, the palace is swathed in garlands and old-fashioned wreaths bearing apples and pine cones. Staff members in detailed period costumes round out the effect throughout the Tryon Palace buildings and gardens. The calendar is full of themed events as well, including a children's production of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and two evening candlelight tours that culminate in fireworks displays.
