Top 10 Heisman Trophy Winners

One of sport's most coveted pieces of hardware, the Heisman Trophy, will be awarded in New York City Saturday night. A trio of quarterbacks are anxiously awaiting the envelope: Tim Tebow of Florida, who is shooting to become only the second back-to-back Heisman winner, Colt McCoy of Texas (could a star Longhorn quarterback possibly have a better name?), and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, who is one-sixteenth Cherokee, but still the pride of that Native American nation. Here's a look at TIME's top 10 Heisman winners.

Davis, who TIME called "a jet-propelled gent" in a 1945 cover story, teamed with Felix "Doc" Blanchard — "Mr. Inside" to Davis' "Mr. Outside" — to form a legendary backfield on Army's undefeated teams. The all-purpose back averaged 11.7 yards per play in 1945, still a major college record. He had finished second in the Heisman voting the previous two years (in '45, Blanchard won it), and went on to win two championships with the Los Angeles Rams. Davis died in March 2005 at age 80. — Sean Gregory
